Algerian national team player Abdelkader Ghezzal has reacted to yesterday’s incident when the Fennecs bus was showered with projectiles, resulting in three of his team-mates being injured.
“It was crazy, as if we had fallen into a trap. The bus windows shattered, team-mates were injured. At the airport, all was well and there were no security problems. All journalists, both Algerian and Egyptian were together,” he said while speaking to DZfoot.com.
“Then the rocks began after about one kilometre. People were coming from all sides of the road. I do not know if it was prepared, but it seemed like it.”
Ghezzal went into detail about how the Algerian squad escaped without suffering any more injuries, by taking cover underneath their bags in the middle of the bus.
“Our first reaction was to get in the middle of the bus and to crouch with our bags over our heads. In the end, we made it out with just some stitches but with the rocks that were flying into the bus it could have been worse,” he added.
The striker concluded by saying that even though he had been expecting some form of intimidation, he had never imagined that things would reach such a low point. He insisted that better security must be provided or his team wouldn’t even bother to leave their hotel out of fear for their own safety.
