Star sales forced Torres to quit Liverpool - FansFC.com

{ Fernando Torres has revealed the sales of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano played a part in his decision to leave Liverpool Football Club.

The Spaniard completed a stunning British record £50million move to Chelsea on deadline day, and he is set to debut for the Blues against his former club on Sunday.

Torres has revealed the decision to quit Anfield was down to broken promises, including the sales of big-name stars Alonso, to Real Madrid, and Mascherano to Barcelona.

“In my first two seasons at the club, they played in the semi-finals of UEFA Champions League and finished second in the Premier League, very close to Manchester United,” he said.

"Then we were very, very close to being one of the top teams for a long time because everyone was together and everyone was moving in the right direction.

"But when you let Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano leave, that is a clear message. It was important, not so much for me, but for the club."
