Former Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood admits he could stay at Ross County for the long term after being appointed manager until the end of the season.

Calderwood has been unveiled after Willie McStay was removed from his post, having failed to win any of his nine games in charge.

Calderwood has been without a job since saving Kilmarnock from relegation in a short-term post last season and has been handed the same target by the Irn-Bru First Division side's chairman, Roy MacGregor.

Calderwood told BBC Scotland: "I was obviously out the game this season, there were a few things that I thought might be happening, all abroad, and never materialised. I'm not one for sitting about the house.

"People that have been up here and I have a lot of respect for, Craig Brewster, Alex Smith, Dick Campbell, they always spoke very highly of the club, the set-up and facilities.

"The chairman is a very successful businessman but his enthusiasm and plans for the club are very exciting.

"We'll have a look at each other until the end of the season and we'll see what happens.

"It gets me out training again, which is what I love. It's my life and it's difficult being on the outside looking in."

LONDON 2012: Premier League curtain raiser will clash with Olympics - More Than The Games

{ Posted: Tuesday 15th February 2011 | 22:06

By Sportsbeat staff

THE curtain raiser to next year's Premier League season will kick-off on the final day of the London 2012 Olympics - but a compromise has kept the match out of the capital.

CLASH: The 2012 Community Shield will be staged during the Olympics - but it won't be played at Wembley (Reuters)
CLASH: The 2012 Community Shield will be staged during the Olympics - but it won't be played at Wembley (Reuters)

A condition of London 2012's host city contract with the International Olympic Committee forces organisers to work with other sporting bodies to ensure the Games takes place in an uncluttered calendar.

Organising committee chief executive Paul Deighton had already negotiated for the FA Premier League season to start one week later than usual but it appeared there was no other way to accommodate the annual Community Shield, between the top flight champions and FA Cup winners.

It was suggested the match could be played one or two days after the Olympics conclude but feedback from clubs suggested they wanted more time between the fixture and their opening league games on Sunday August 19th.

Wembley will stage the final of the Olympic men's football tournament on Saturday August 11th and therefore won't be available to stage showpiece curtain raiser.

Football Association officials had considered taking the match aboard but again there was opposition from the majority of teams consulted - who all wanted the game played on Sunday August 12th.

Manchester's Old Trafford - which will host a men's Olympic semi-final five days earlier - is considered the frontrunner to stage the game, although Manchester United have featured in 14 of the last 18 Community Shield matches.

Bolton beats Everton 2-0 in Premier League (AP)

BOLTON, England (AP)—Daniel Sturridge kept up his impressive scoring record for Bolton to inspire a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The England under-21 forward scored for the third straight match since joining on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, smashing home a swerving finish in the 67th minute to seal Bolton’s victory.

Sturridge, who was one of English football’s great hopes when he came through the ranks at Manchester City, rarely featured at Chelsea following his move to Stamford Bridge in 2009. But he is flourishing now he is getting regular starts at Bolton.

“I’m just delighted to be playing first-team football,” he said. “The manager has instilled a lot of confidence in me, told me to go out and play my normal game. I’m enjoying it.”

Gary Cahill put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute, his header from an inswinging free kick by Stuart Holden deflecting into the net off the unfortunate Everton defender John Heitinga.

Everton struggled to create many clear-cut chances and remain 13th in the standings, three points off the bottom three.

Bolton is now a point behind seventh-place Sunderland.

Cahill had already shown he was a threat at set-pieces by heading wide at the far post early on following Matt Taylor’s deep corner.

But Everton didn’t learn the lesson and, minutes later, the England center back found space in the area to meet Holden’s free kick with a header that deflected off the static Heitinga and into the net past wrong-footed goalkeeper Tom Howard.

Australia midfielder Tim Cahill was Everton’s most dangerous player at the other end, shooting wide in the 17th before firing straight at goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen from the edge of the area just before halftime.

Everton dominated possession at the start of the second half but failed to seriously trouble Jaaskelainen. The concession of a second goal then killed off any realistic hopes of a comeback.

A long ball hoisted forward by the Bolton defense ended with Lee nodding a header down to Sturridge, who was running in from the right. The forward’s finish was unerring as it fizzed past Howard from 10 yards.

Sturridge also scored the winner against Wolverhampton on his Bolton debut on Feb. 2, and again at Tottenham last weekend.

Holden had a goal disallowed in the 79th when the ball was harshly adjudged to be out of play as Sturridge backheeled to the United States midfielder. Sturridge then curled just wide from long range as Bolton threatened to score a third.

Hearts boss Jim Jefferies can only see positives at Tynecastle after his quest to claim third place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League got back on track with a 2-0 win at Hamilton.

After a 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in their last outing, a Stephen Elliott double got the Jambos back on track to go 15 points ahead of fourth-placed Kilmarnock, who lost to Hibernian.

A comfortable win in Lanarkshire was achieved despite Jefferies being unable to call on strikers Kevin Kyle, Calum Elliot and David Obua, with Ryan Stevenson restricted to a bench appearance due to flu.

The former Killie boss is keeping his fingers crossed that he will have all four players fit soon to add to a squad which has been boosted by the recent return of Andrew Driver, who made another substitute appearance following his recovery from a thigh tear.

Jefferies had the added bonus of Scotland defender Andy Webster making his second debut for the club after re-signing on transfer deadline day.

"We have been talking about getting third place and it's 15 points which is a big gap," the Gorgie boss said.

"After that we can enjoy it because there is no pressure on us if we can't go any lower. If we achieve that early then it will be fantastic.

"Ryan Stevenson was unwell and couldn't make it but we decided to put him on the bench.

"Driver is short of match fitness, he needs to get 90 minutes but he is a quality player and I thought Webster looked as if he had never been away

"We will assess Kyle on Monday after he gets an injection (for groin injury), Calum Elliot (knee) should be back training next week, big Obua should be okay and Ryan Stevenson will shake off the flu."

Bottom side Accies are five points behind St Mirren but have a game in hand over the Paisley club.

Hamilton boss Billy Reid claimed that there had been no threat from the visitors until Elliott had headed the opener in the 22nd minute from a Lee Wallace cross, which was true.

However, there was little entertainment for the New Douglas Park supporters who have not seen their side win a home league game this season.

Consequently, a band of Accies fans in a crowd of 2,876 again showed their disgruntlement, especially at the break when the players were given stick as they headed down the tunnel after a first half in which the home side's defensive formation saw them simply surrender possession to Hearts.

While defender David Elebert admitted that the last thing the players need to hear was boos and jeers, Reid said: "When you are losing games at home you are going to get that from any supporters.

"I think they are pretty fair to be honest with you.

"We have not won a game at home and they are paying their money.

"They want to see a winning team and if they want to shout at me then no problem.

"But it was a wee bit disappointing when Marco Paixao comes on the park as substitute and there is a bit of huffing and puffing but I thought his attitude was brilliant."

Reid continued: "I am trying to take the positives out of the game. I thought we played pretty well in the second half.

"There are two schools of thought - it's easy to play when you are 2-0 down, or sometimes you can fold.

"But I thought some of our one-touch play was excellent.

"We have to go and win games and we certainly did try to do that in the second half."

Watch every Premier League goal - The Sun

{

The thrilling tally beat the previous Premier League best of 41 - set on November 8-10, 1997 and equalled on November 27-28 last year.

Everton and Blackpool shared an eight goal thriller, as did Arsenal and Newcastle, while seven strikes counted in Wigan's game with Blackburn.

Stoke got the better of Sunderland in a five-goal thriller at the Britannia Stadium, while Manchester City thumped West Brom 3-0 at Eastlands.

Aston Villa and Fulham drew 2-2 while Wolves ended Manchester United's unbeaten run with a shock 2-1 win at Molineux.

Chelsea's bid to retain their Premier League crown was further dented with a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool while West Ham's misery continued with a loss to Birmingham at Upton Park.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's quest to finish in the top four stayed on track with a 2-1 victory over Bolton.

No Premier League revolution despite wild weekend (Reuters)

By Mitch Phillips

LONDON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - An incredible Premier League weekend that rained goals, upsets, comebacks, penalties and stoppage-time drama has produced a media mountain of comment about its egalitarian nature.

League leaders Manchester United lost their unbeaten record against bottom team Wolverhampton Wanderers while Newcastle United came from 4-0 down at home to draw 4-4 with title-chasing Arsenal.

Even “unglamorous” fixtures such as Everton against Blackpool (5-3), Wigan Athletic against Blackburn Rovers (4-3) and Stoke City v Sunderland (3-2) produced 20 goals between them to back up the idea that England’s top division provides entertainment to burn.

The weekend was finished off with the wonderful theatre of Fernando Torres making his Chelsea debut against former club Liverpool only for the 50-million pounds man to be relegated to a sideshow as Liverpool continued their renaissance under manager Kenny Dalglish with their fourth successive victory.

However, although the upset results maintained the pattern of the season, a scratch beneath the surface gloss reveals that fundamentally very little has changed.

A top six of United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool hardly points to a changing of the guard.

Similarly a February bottom six of West Ham, Wolves, Wigan, West Brom, Birmingham City and Blackpool would not have been too far from most people’s predictions when the action kicked off last August.

Wolves, who were denied a draw at Old Trafford only by a last-minute goal in November, deserved their 2-1 win on Saturday and coming after victories over Chelsea and Manchester City it was hardly a fluke.

Yet they have also lost to Fulham, Wigan, Blackpool, Blackburn, Stoke and, the team who have replaced them at the bottom - West Ham United. West Bromwich Albion, promoted this season, have beaten Arsenal and Man City and drawn at Old Trafford - but still sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo on Sunday - while Blackpool, red-hot relegation favourites at the start of the season, have done the double over Liverpool.

The excitement and variety certainly puts other leagues in the shade, not least Scotland where Sunday’s 2-2 Cup draw between Rangers ans Celtic means that their will be a record seven Old Firm derbies this year.

“People talk about the strength of La Liga and the incredible quality of Barcelona but you simply do not get the bottom team in Spain beating the top team,” former Liverpool defender-turned analyst Alan Hansen wrote in the Daily Telegraph on Monday.

“In the Premier League this season any of the top four teams can play away from home and get turned over.”

The high-risk attacking approach of teams like Blackpool and Wolves means they have more chance of snatching a headline win than battling for a point but it also leaves them open to hefty beatings and both could easily find themselves in the bottom three come May.

Manchester United barely broke stride in defeat as Arsenal’s draw and Chelsea’s home defeat cushioned the Molineux blow and though they have drawn eight and lost one of their 12 away games this season they remain four points clear and odds-on for the title.
