LYON, France (AP)—Former Lyon and Arsenal player Remi Garde will succeed Claude Puel as Lyon’s new coach.

The club said Garde, who currently heads Lyon’s youth academy, will be officially presented later Wednesday.

The seven-time French champion fired Puel earlier this week, ending the coach’s disappointing three-year tenure at the club.

Lyon reached the Champions League semifinals for the first time in 2010 but hasn’t won a trophy since Puel took over from Alain Perrin, who led Lyon to the league and French Cup double in 2007-08.

The 45-year-old Garde started his career with Lyon where he played nine years before joining Strasbourg then Arsenal. He returned to the club in 2003 as a staff member.

BANGKOK (AP)—Winfried Schaefer is set to be appointed as coach of Thailand’s national team.

Local media reported Wednesday that former Cameroon coach Schaefer signed a memorandum of understanding with the Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi.

Reports put the salary at almost $50,000 per month for three years.

He would replace former Manchester United great Bryan Robson, who resigned earlier this month after successful cancer treatment.

Schaefer, a German, led Cameroon to the African Nations Cup title in 2002 and coached the team at that year’s World Cup. He was most recently in charge of Azerbaijan club Baku.

TURIN, Italy (AP)—Former Juventus captain Antonio Conte says he’s fulfilling a dream by becoming the coach.

Conte was appointed as the new coach after agreeing to a two-year deal with the two-time European Champion on Tuesday.

“It feels like I’m coming home as I have always dreamed of coaching this team,” Conte said. “We have a good base to build on in the squad. We didn’t challenge for the title last season and that has left some of the players a little deluded. We need the right type of motivation for next season because we have a very good squad.”

Juventus has already been active in the transfer market and brought in World Cup-winning midfielder Andrea Pirlo from AC Milan.

Even though Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has promised a sizable transfer budget, the likelihood is that Conte will continue to rely on veterans Alessandro Del Piero and Gianlugi Buffon to lead the side.

“Del Piero and Buffon are still very useful for the team,” Conte did. “They are proven winners and have a great work ethic.

“We will have to have a proper look at our transfer targets and find players that fit into how I want the team to play.”

Conte joins Juventus from Siena, which he guided to promotion to Serie A this season. It was the second time he led a team into the topflight, after Bari was promoted in 2009.

He replaces Luigi Delneri, who failed to take Juventus into Europe with a seventh-place finish in the league.

It completed an underwhelming season in which Juventus was eliminated from the Europa League at the group stage despite drawing all six of its games.

“We want to be winning and we want to get back to doing so under Antonio Conte,” Agnelli said. “He is the first piece of the jigsaw that will get us back to winning ways.”

Conte has twice been linked to the Juventus coaching post, but lost out to Claudio Ranieri in 2009 and Ciro Ferrara in 2010.

He played for Juventus from 1991 until he retired in 2004 and scored 44 goals in 419 games. He was part of the team that won the 1996 Champions League, the 1993 UEFA Cup and also helped the club to five Serie A titles.

Conte was also in the Italy squad that reached the final of the 1994 World Cup and scored one of his two international goals on the way to Italy finishing the 2000 European Championships second.

“The main objective for me is to put the team in a position to challenge for trophies,” Conte said. “Our history demands we do so. We need the right attitude and approach to work and then we can return to where we should be.”

MILAN (AP)—Italy coach Cesare Prandelli believes the 2012 European Championship qualifier against Estonia on Friday is still important despite his team being five points clear of its nearest group rival.

Italy has won four of five qualifiers and drawn the other match to lead Group C. Slovenia and Serbia are joint second after having both played a game more.

“It is the most difficult match I have had since taking over,” Prandelli said Monday. “It is a decisive game against Estonia. I want a squad that will give their all because this game is fundamental (to qualifying), and traditionally we haven’t always played our best in June and September.”

Prandelli has selected a 25-man squad for fitness testing ahead of the match and the friendly on Tuesday against Ireland in Liege.

Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano return to the squad after ending the season on high notes. Balotelli won the FA Cup with Manchester City, while Cassano was part of the squad that won AC Milan’s first Serie A title since 2004.

“They haven’t played much, though oddly enough that means they are likely to do better in the physical tests than the others,” Prandelli said. “I said the same thing to Balotelli as I’ve just said to you. He seemed to understand and he isn’t happy with his season, despite finishing with a win in a final.

“Cassano must knuckle down to work in Milan and find his place in the team. Those who don’t play much, generally, lose their form.”

One player not back in the squad is Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who violated Prandelli’s code of conduct by ending the season serving a three-match ban for hitting an opponent.

He also missed the wins over Slovenia and Ukraine in March as he was banned by UEFA for three games for elbowing Shakhtar Donetsk captain Dario Srna in the face during a Champions League match.

When he replaced Marcello Lippi after Italy’s first-round elimination from the World Cup, Prandelli instituted new rules whereby national team players are expected to meet high behavioral standards even with their clubs.

“De Rossi isn’t out of the squad for technical reasons and I am very sorry about that,” Prandelli said. “He needs to find his form and consistency that he appears to have lost over the last few months.

“I haven’t closed the door on him, but certain things on the pitch aren’t acceptable and I have said that from the start.”

Italy’s next qualifier is at the Faeroe Islands on Sept. 2.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Felix Magath is returning immediately to coach Wolfsburg, the club he led to a surprising Bundesliga title in 2009 but is in danger of relegation.

Magath was officially presented Friday, two days after his departure from Schalke, and conducted his first practice session later in the day. His contract runs through mid-2013.

“I was immediately on fire,” Magath said about Wolfsburg’s offer.

Magath was fired from Schalke shortly before the halfway mark in his four-year contract as coach and manager on Wednesday, then he quit as a board member to clear the way for a quick move to Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg has fallen on hard times. It fired Steve McClaren, the first English coach in the Bundesliga, but the club won only one of five games under his assistant and successor Pierre Littbarski and has dropped to next to last.

Littbarski was Wolfsburg’s third coach since Magath’s departure after Armin Veh and McClaren.

Wolfsburg also has terminated the contract of its manager Dieter Hoeness and Magath will combine the functions of coach and manager, as he did in his first stint in Wolfsburg.

Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, Wolfsburg’s board chairman, said Hoeness and Wolfsburg parted company by mutual agreement.

Wolfsburg, backed financially by the giant automaker Volkswagen, was three points ahead of bottom-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach and plays in Stuttgart, one of Magath’s former clubs, on Saturday in the Bundesliga. There are eight games left in the season.

“It’s a precarious situation,” Garcia Sanz said.

Stuttgart also is in danger of dropping back into the relegation zone.

“Magath will prevent us from getting relegated,” he said.

Magath was forced out of Schalke in a dispute with club chairman Clemens Toennies, despite taking the club to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and the final of the German Cup. Schalke was only 10th in the Bundesliga, however.

Besides the 2009 title with Wolfsburg, Magath also swept the German double two consecutive seasons with Bayern Munich before getting fired.

BELGRADE, April 1 (Reuters) - Europe’s soccer governing body UEFA should impose a solution that would lift Bosnia’s suspension from Euro 2012, their coach Safet Susic said on Friday.

Susic spoke to Reuters by telephone after UEFA and FIFA suspended the Bosnian national team and clubs from international football after the country’s football federation (NFSBiH) failed to adopt new statutes.

“I think UEFA should come up with a solution and impose it on the Bosnian Football Federation because there is absolutely no chance that the NFSBiH might find a way out of the present deadlock and get the job done,” he said.

“These people are incapable of running the NFSBiH properly, although this situation is partly a result of political orders because Bosnia is an ethnically divided country where a dysfunctional system has now caught up with football.”

Under the present NFSBiH statues, a Serb, a Croat and an ethnic Muslim take turns in running the body.

Susic said his players were the innocent victims of the suspension.

“Denying the players a chance to perform on the big stage through no fault of their own is like sending innocent people to prison,” he said.

“We can only hope that UEFA and FIFA will show some level of understanding for our political situation and come up with a feasible model because, quite frankly, I don’t see another way.”

JOB LOSSES

At a congress in Sarajevo on Tuesday, 28 of 53 NFSBiH deputies voted against instructions by FIFA and UEFA to replace the rotating three-man presidential system with one that would meet international standards.

The Bosnians are well placed to reach their first major tournament as an independent nation, having collected seven points from four games in the European championship’s Group D after Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Romania.

They are fourth in the group, five points behind leaders France and one behind Belarus and Albania but with a game in hand on all three.

“It would be a disaster to end the qualifiers by getting kicked out of the competition and it would affect not just the players and football, which is the only good and productive thing Bosnia has at the moment,” Susic said.

“It would result in job losses because the soccer industry employs a considerable number of people.”

Susic said he hoped to get support from Bosnia’s rivals.

“I also hope the other teams in the group will stand up for us, especially leaders France who beat us at home and would probably have those three points taken away if we were to be expelled from the competition.

“Whether we qualify for next year’s finals or not, all we want as a team is a fair chance to compete on the playing field but unfortunately it’s not in our hands.”

BORDEAUX, France, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Girondins Bordeaux coach Jean Tigana has decided to stay after his resignation was rejected and a meeting with club officials on Monday reassured him about his position and the side’s prospects.

“The doubts have been lifted, it’s all in the past,” Tigana told reporters after leaving the meeting.

The 2009 French champions are mired in midtable and lost 5-1 at FC Lorient on Feb. 19 but had given their under pressure coach a boost by beating Auxerre 3-0 on Saturday.

The former Fulham boss cut an enigmatic figure in the post-match news conference following the Auxerre game however, hinting all was not well.

His assistant coach Michel Pavon also left in mysterious circumstances last week.

Tigana only took over at Bordeaux in the close-season when Laurent Blanc left to coach France and knew his task would be difficult when the club sold top midfielder Yoann Gourcuff to Olympique Lyon in August.

Striker Marouane Chamakh also quit to join Arsenal last year.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says coach Luigi Del Neri must be shown faith by the club's board of directors and keep him at the Bianconeri.

The shot-stopper believes the tactician was given a chance to perform, and should be allowed to until the end of the season.

"I think he [Del Neri] should stay," the 33-year-old told Tuttosport. "The directors gave their full faith in the coach, and he should stay until the end of the season.

"When a players walks onto the pitch, it does not matter whether they like the coach or not. Their focus is on doing their role, which is the reason why they get paid. The remainder of the problems stay away.

"All the players hold Del Neri in high esteem, and up until the win against Inter, everyone was saying that he had had a good season. We now need to approach every match as if it were a final, and work out the outcomes in a month or two when the season ends."

The custodian believes his team-mates must keep their heads up for the remainder of the season, and not act as if all hope has been lost.

"We need to go onto the pitch without the air of feeling as if we are at a funeral," he expressed. "We need to remain optimistic and happy to show the coach and the fans that we want to achieve something important."

The Bianconeri are set to face league leaders and rivals Milan this weekend, and Buffon is hoping the side can end their two-match losing streak and defeat the Rossoneri.

"If on Saturday, we can find our way, we can change the way our season will finish, ending it on a high. Should we lose, we will be repeating the same mistakes that we did last season," concluded Buffon.
