United will offer coaching role to Neville
Gary Neville will be offered the chance to become a coach at Manchester United after the club captain brought the curtain down on a glittering career last night by formally announcing his retirement with immediate effect. Neville, who will celebrate his 36th birthday a fortnight tomorrow, was widely expected to retire at the end of the season but the defender opted to bring the decision forward after finally accepting defeat in a running four-year battle with injury. David Gill, the United chief executive, confirmed last night that Neville will be asked to remain at Old Trafford “whether on the coaching or the commercial side”, although, given the misgivings he has expressed about pursuing a career in management, there are no guarantees that the player Sir Alex Ferguson described as “the best English right back of his generation” will take the club up on their offer.
The Daily Mail’s Matt Lawton describes Neville as a “true fighter who bristled with attitude”, while the Daily Star speculates that Neville could one day be United boss. The Daily Telegraph says Neville will consider roles coaching at United and with Sky. Henry Winter adds: “The greatest compliment that can be paid to Gary Neville is this: England have never been able to replace him.”
Richard Williams in The Guardian adds that Gary was “combative, old-fashioned, outspoken” and that “he’ll be remembered for controversy as well as brilliance”.
