More striker woes for Pardew - Clubcall

{

Newcastle have confirmed Shola Ameobi is facing a month out of action, after breaking his cheekbone in the Magpies defeat at Fulham.

The news will come as a massive blow to Alan Pardew, whose attacking options are thin on the ground following the deadline day sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool.
Pardew has now called for the full support of the Toon fans, who he feels need to rally around the team in order to see them through to the end of the season.
The manager stated: "Shola's injury has not helped our cause, it's another blow following the one on Monday.
"We need to rally together and I thank them (the fans) for their support at Fulham."
The 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage has left the Magpies in tenth, on 30 points from 24 games, which is seven points outside the top six and six points from the bottom three.

England go down again - Clubcall

{

England have lost the latest ODI in Sydney by two wickets after Australia completed their highest-ever one-day run chase.

The hosts now lead the series 5-1 after they secured a dramatic win in the final over of the game when chasing England's 333-6 - which had included Jonathan Trott's career-best score of 137.
His performance - and an all-round better display from England - looked to have set Paul Collingwood's men up for a morale-boosting victory but the Aussies produced a wonderful innings to again claim the win.
Australia largely had a superb 70-ball knock of 82 from under-fire acting captain Michael Clarke to thank for the win as they eventually reached 334-8 with just four balls remaining.
England's woes were compounded when Collingwood suffered a back injury at the end of the visitors' innings and did not bowl, while Ajmal Shahzad (hamstring) and Chris Tremlett (side) also picked up knocks and are expected to fly home early on Friday.
Andy Strauss revealed Collingwood should be fit for the final one-dayer of the series but the Test skipper admitted losing after posting such a big score was tough to take.
"We had a very good batting performance, Jonathan Trott played outstandingly well and was well supported by a few of the lads and 333 is a good score on any ground," he told Sky Sports.
"It was a good wicket but obviously we were not helped by Paul Collingwood not being able to bowl but he's okay.
"He had a back spasm so hopefully should recover fairly quickly."

Scots without injured trio - Clubcall

{

Scotland head-coach Andy Robinson has revealed that Hugo Southwell, Rory Lamont and Joe Ansbro will not feature against Ireland.

Robinson's side have made a disappointing start to the Six Nations having been touted as the dark horses once again before the start of the tournament.
After suffering a spirited defeat to France in Paris, Scotland were largely disappointing against Wales as they lost 24-6 at Murrayfield in their last outing.
The Scots will be without Southwell, who picked up a facial injury against Wales, whilst Lamont and Ansbro suffered injuries playing for Toulon and Northampton respectively last weekend.
Robinson is also having to cope with the fact that six forwards sat out training on Monday, but they should recover in time for the Ireland game.
He said: "We wish all of them a speedy recovery. Our medical staff will continue to treat and monitor our injured forwards.
"Everybody was hurting after the display against Wales but we must now focus on the challenge that Ireland bring and there's absolute determination to bounce back against them at Murrayfield on Sunday."

KP pushed up England order - Clubcall

{

England look set to use Kevin Pietersen as an opener at the World Cup, having started with him in that role in their warm-up opener.

Andrew Strauss' men were less than impressive in beating Canada by just 16 runs in the first of two warm-up matches, but it was the batting order that caught the eye.
Pietersen, who recently denied talk that he was set to retire from ODI cricket, was given the chance to partner the captain at the top of the order, but it didn't go according to plan on Wednesday.
Both openers struggled against one of the World Cup minnows, with Strauss making just one and Pietersen out for 24 as Andy Flower's men struggled again following their recent 6-1 series defeat in Australia.
When asked by Sky Sports about his new role, Pietersen admitted: "It's really exciting. It's a nice positive move by the team. I will just look to play my normal game."
One major plus for England was the return to form and fitness of Stuart Broad. The Nottinghamshire paceman, back after a stomach muscle injury, ended the match with figures of 5-37.

Ashton looks to the future - Clubcall

{

Chris Ashton wants England to move on from their demolition of Italy and work hard to secure Six Nations glory this season.

The 23-year-old was the star of an excellent England display at Twickenham on Saturday as his four tries helped Martin Johnson's men record a 59-13 victory over the Azzurri.
The Northampton flyer scored twice in each half, while Mark Cueto, Mike Tindall, Danny Care and James Haskell also touched down as England cemented their place at the top of the table.
Ashton has now bagged six tries in the first two matches of the tournament after scoring a brace as the English opened their account with a 26-19 victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium last weekend.
Many pundits believe that England have their best chance of winning the Six Nations since they last lifted the trophy in 2003 with the way that the fixture list has been kind to them, as they play France and Scotland at home over the next few weeks.
But Ashton refuses to look too far ahead and feels that hard work and not personal accolades is the way to achieve success.
"It (breaking records) wasn't something I tried to do," he said. "I'm just glad to be in the team and I hope we carry on winning in the Six Nations. I'm glad Mark Cueto got his try as well.
"We know that (talk about winning the Grand Slam will increase) but we've just got to keep on practising as hard as we can and keep on doing our best."
