Montella appointed new AS Roma coach (Reuters)

ROME, Feb 21 (Reuters) - AS Roma have appointed Vincenzo Montella as coach until the end of the season after Claudio Ranieri quit on Sunday, the club said in a statement on Monday.

Ranieri resigned following fan protests and after eighth-placed Roma went down 4-3 at Genoa having been 3-0 up. They also lost 3-2 at home in a Champions League first leg to last 16 debutants Shakhtar Donetsk last week.

Youth team boss and former striker Montella was a favourite among fans to replace Ranieri. Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti had also been strongly linked with the club in the media.
